Mysteries of Lost Civilizations, Anne Millard. Now here is excitement in a child’s learning experience! The brilliantly colorful drawings and photos are full of action and fire the imagination. Archaeological debate is addressed such as the interpretation of the Vikings as either brutal colonialists or peaceful settlers. Even the origins of writing, papal scandals and -- of course -- numerous unsolved historical mysteries are explored or highlighted in a manner which sparks curiosity and zest for discovery! Bravo!
Secret Cities, Mike Corbishley. This introduction to archaeology for the young is quite informative and factual. It is also written in a style which maintains interest, evoking an emotional response through words like "eerie", "grand scale!", and "ferocious". It encourages young archaeologists to imagine and think for themselves. Invitingly illustrated with color drawings and photos.

What Do We Know About Prehistoric People?, Mike Corbishley. Bravo, Mike! Where earlier books were "very good", the current series is absolutely enthralling (even for an adult!). The format is an astute and controversial question for each chapter name. Text and photos are arranged in small self-contained vignettes which are concise, have memorable impact, and draw the eye in random patterns across the page to capture and hold the reader’s attention. Issues such as women’s roles trade and defense and defense enhance interest. There is also more drama and mystery in the writing style and illustrations than in Corbishley’s earlier works.
