Harry Potter series, J. K. Rowling.  An essay is due here:

Notes on Truth, Censorship, and Harry Potter

by Dan Gallagher

Over two centuries ago, men died for the traditional freedoms of the American people. Among these fine traditions is a deep suspicion of censorship. Rightly so, for important truths and artistic expressions are quashed when society descends the slippery slope of allowing even untruths and sad excuses for art to be outlawed. However, many who would undermine another American tradition, that we are a nation under God, abuse our proper aversion to censorship.

In cautioning parents about the fascination for the occult that the Harry Potter series insinuates upon youths, I must relate a few examples of society’s promotion of evil, and de facto censorship of wholesome words:

Billy Joel’s song "Only the Good Die Young" ridicules young Catholic girls for remaining virgin, and portrays pre-marital sex as a healthy thing that the Catholic church censors from their education. Some of us fail to react to such material, or monitor "the world’s" influences upon young minds. That is truly a sacrifice of our God-given responsibilities to society’s mores. How conveniently those who purvey socially erosive words claim that we must eschew censorship; how easily we fall to this, forgetting that young minds are quite different from mature minds that have already been educated spiritually and in the critical analysis of literature & art.

Another example is an opinion editorial that I wrote to a magazine. My spiritually-based argument against abortion was published, but the secular argument (more effective on anti-religious readers) was censored out. Also censored was my discussion of the fact that birth control pills and RU-486 do not prevent pregnancy, rather they starve the new baby by preventing adherence to the womb – and that the media usually misinforms people about this or censors publication of such facts.

Censorship runs both ways, and we never blink an eye unless we happen to notice the last issue of Scholastic’s book catalog for kids – in which a book plainly making a hero of a homosexual child was advertised. Did you, as a parent, notice this? If you looked, what did you do about it? As Pope John-Paul II said, "We are now in the final battle between good and evil."

Now to Potter: The issue is simple. This genuinely enthralling tale portrays as enviable kids who excel beyond their peers and teachers at magic, and eventually fight evil with magic. In many passages of the Bible, God said that any form of divination or enticement to it is a grave evil, and He said to never fight evil with evil. If you do not know of these passages as a parent, you must become acquainted, for St. Jerome correctly wrote that failure to know scripture is failure to know Christ (he intentionally stated this in the negative as a warning). Some say Potter is harmless, just like C.S. Lewis’ works. But Lewis portrayed magic as the evil it is, and had his child-heroes fight evil with virtue.

What of the classic myths, and other works that so spark the imagination and help would-be authors learn to weave tales? These too are often in opposition to God’s lessons. They should only be kept from young minds that have not yet been equipped to discern good influences from evil. Adults and older children whose faith and training in literature and the Word of God should read the myths, Potter, and the like – simply for the attainment of the talent of skillful writing. Only then will they have the armor from God ‘s Love that enables them to avoid Satan’s hooks.

Let us never forget that the shedding of soldiers’ blood for our human traditions comes second to the fact that our God humbled Himself to become a man, and suffered for the redemption of our souls. As parents, we must never let society’s mores supplant God’s Word.

Thanks for considering these thoughts.
